GTR Paving Pellets
Laboratory Procedures
Paving Pellets can be used as you would any asphalt/bitumen in asphalt hot mix concrete ........... with or without additional bitumen.
Refer to ASTM International Standard WK20240 , ASTM D6114, or ASTM D140 for mixing and sampling procedures. Review Typical Mix Designs (in pdf format).
Read the DSR use for GTR Paving Pellets. Call for specific "re-liquefaction procedures" if needed.
Manufacturer suggested use for making GTR Paving Pellet laboratory samples:
GTR Paving Pellets are used as you would any modified asphalt/bitumen in asphalt hot mix concrete with one exception.
- High sheer mixing imitating the action in the mixing chamber of an asphalt hot plant is required*. Hobart can work but, we recommend a rotating metal cement mixer be heated with a 'flame-O' propane torch to 375 degrees F. (173degrees C.),
- add the appropriate amount (5,000 gr.. or more) of oven heated - 350 degree F. aggregate or aggregate heated in the mixer with the 'Flame-0'
- then add the desired amount of Paving Pellets (gap graded approx. 6% and OGFC approx. 9%). Test as you would any asphalt hot mix concrete.
*During actual hot mix production, the GTR pellets are metered into the mixing chamber via a RAP feeder or directly into the pug mill as any bitumen. Pellets melt within 30 to 40 seconds with agitation caused by the "ball-mill" effect of the aggregates in the mix-chamber.
To obtain higher production levels at the hot plant and still meet asphalt-rubber specs, the contractor may add 1% of local liquid bitumen to accelerate melting of the pellets and still achieve the preferred ASTM ratio of rubber to bitumen.
No added bitumen required:
If you desire to use the GTR pellets with no additional asphalt oil, add 6% to start with your reference design and make a ladder of 1% increments. You must use a gap-graded or open graded mix design. *(see typical mix designs under the typical mix design button of Lab Procedures). We typically find that 7% to 9% is standard for most limestone aggregates depending on absorbency and gradation.
As with most good asphalt binders, you will see improvement in the Superpave numbers for high temperature performance with a gain in the bottom end as well.
